Ski rack comparison - Thule vs Yakima vs Rhino-Rack

Rhino Rack lockable ski carrier

  • 4 Snowboard or 6 pairs of Skis
  • Universal fitting clamps to most non-Rhino-Rack crossbars
  • Key locking
  • 5 Year Warranty

Solid rack offering good value

The Rhino Rack lockable ski carrier comes ready to install onto most types of roof rack crossbars. The provided clamps allow for easy installation by simply attaching the rack to the crossbar using 2 allen bolts per clamp. The Allen bolts have a security pin that means only the supplied tool can be used. It’s also possible to attach the Rhino Rack ski carrier to the crossbar T-slot using the provided T-slot bolts. This results in a much cleaner installation.

Once installed the Rhino Rack secures your skis, snowboards or fishing rods in a durable rubber jaw. This rubber prevents damage to your gear while providing a tight fit. To open the carrier, simply push the large release button. The size of the button makes it easy to operate even when using thick gloves. To keep your gear secure, this ski carrier comes with integrated locks.

If you need to load skis or snowboards with oversized bindings, there is a special mounting hardware (part# WR09) and riser kit (part# S550) available separately that increases the gap between the carrier and vehicle roof.

Overall the Rhino Rack lockable ski carrier is a good quality ski rack that should give you years of good service.

Pro Tip

If you have loads of other gear to carry, why not consider a cargo box. Cargo boxes will transport your skis, snowboards and other gear safely and securely.

Buyer's Guide

A ski rack allows for quick, easy-to-use, and secure transportation of your skis. Let us recommend the ideal carrier for you!

Thule, Yakima and Rhino-Rack all make great products. Their ski and snowboard racks are no different. Which one you'll decide to buy might depend on several things including price or being invested in a particular base system already. Fact is all of the racks are awesome and you won't go wrong with buying any of them.

What to look for

The first thing to look at is the type of ski rack you need. Depending on your vehicle and load requirements you might opt for either a crossbar mounted rack, hitch mounted rack or even a rooftop cargo box.

If you already have roof rack fitted to your car, then crossbar mounted ski racks is the most sensible choice.

All three the ski racks listed have easy to use mounting systems that attach directly to the crossbars with a clamping system. The Thule, Yakima and Rhino rack accommodates a variety of bar profiles, from Aerobars to square bars and all options in between.

Capacity

The next consideration is how much gear you actually want to carry. We suggest buying a rack with more capacity than you normally use for the times you need to carry an extra set of skis or extra snowboard.

The Rhino rack 695mm is a beast and can carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards! To make sure all your toys are secure, it features lockable jaws that will make any thief think twice before trying to liberate your stuff.

Safety is always the primary concern when carrying gear on your vehicle. The soft padding in the jaws not only prevents any damage at the clamping points but also keeps your gear secure.
